DESCRIPTION OF THE EVENT

Join us for our sixth 'Battle of the Street Art' on Cheshire Street on Sunday 4th September 2022 from 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm to witness two legendary street artists battle to create an original graffiti mural from a theme selected by Secret Art London, in only 90 minutes.

In the red corner, we have DS. David Schmidt aka ‘DS’ is a US national, UK-bred urban artist, striving to create visually attractive, mentally engaging art all wrapped up in rich colour and form. The first stencils I painted on the streets were in East London in 2002, an area heavily bombarded by some of the now ‘greats’ of the street art world. The stencils were crude black and white robots, but the art medium struck a note with me as a teenager. As far back as I can remember, my love for art was big enough to tame my hyperactive mind, with laser-like focus on a paper, creating a world of minutely detailed figures. Consequently, a move into a medium using the tool normally suited to a surgeon seemed a natural fit. Inspired and bitten by the street art bug, it wasn’t long before I finished my art education and started to focus on stencil art.

In the blue corner, battling DS, we have Otto Schade. Chilean-born Otto Schade is a contemporary urban Artist based in London since 2006. Schade is known for his surreal and at times abstract figurative paintings, drawings, and high-impact street art. The artist has developed a unique and recognisable graphic style involving twisting, interwoven “ribbons” that depict his subjects. He is also known by his Orbs, sunsets and sillouetes trying to give a message to the society. Otto has been exhibiting and painting murals internationally in Europe, America, Africa and Asia in the last 13 years.

The Battle of Street Art will be presented by our commentator, actor Raymond Rose (Woman in Black, Clash of the Moths) and his glamorous assistant "Fica Bagnata", and will take place in two 45 minute halves, with an interval.

The event will take place at 28 Cheshire Street, outside the Secret Art Gallery. We will be boarding over part of our building, and our contestants will each be given a wall, side-by-side, to create their mural. Expect a festival atmosphere, lots of audience participation and a chance to win original artworks from the competitors.

On the day of the Battle we will also be exhibiting various artworks and merchandise by DS and Otto Schade which are available for sale.

Expect a festival atmosphere, lots of audience participation and a chance to win original artworks from the competitors.

Soft drinks, ice lollies and refreshments, with plenty of vegan friendly options, will be available to purchase at the event.

DESCRIPTION OF THE EVENT

Join us for our fourth 'Battle of the Street Art' on Cheshire Street on Sunday 4th September 2022 from 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm to witness two legendary street artists battle to create an original graffiti mural from a theme selected by Secret Art London, in only 90 minutes.

In the red corner, we have CARTRAIN. Cartrain (born 1991, often stylised cartяain, is a British artist associated with the graffiti urban art movement.

Artist Damien Hirst has threatened to take legal steps against Cartrain over his art and activities. Cartrain's art has been appropriated by artists Gilbert and George.

From Leytonstone, East London, he initially worked only in his local area, but "because no one pays any attention", had decided to move on by the age of 15, to the back streets near Old Street and Brick Lane in Hackney, in addition to central London, even spraying on walls opposite the Houses of Parliament. His work often includes depictions of notable mainstream figures such as George Bush and Elizabeth II, Queen of the UK.

In April 2008 Boris Johnson invited him to display his work at City Hall. In December 2008, Damien Hirst contacted the Design and Artists Copyright Society (DACS) demanding action be taken overworks containing images of his skull sculpture For the Love of God made by then 16-year-old Cartrain, and sold on the internet gallery 100artworks.com.

On the advice of his gallery, Cartrain handed over the artworks to DACS and forfeited the £200 he had made; he said, "I met Christian Zimmermann [from DACS] who told me Hirst personally ordered action on the matter." A spokeswoman for Hirst said: "Damien is not suing Cartrain. This is a straightforward issue of copyright.

Damien owns the copyright to the diamond skull and its image and if it is reproduced without his permission DACS are instructed to deal with this on his behalf." Jimmy Cauty has supported Cartrain, claiming he has a right to use existing images to make a new artwork.

Copyright lawyer Paul Tackaberry compared the two images and said, "This is fairly non-contentious legally. Ask yourself, what portion of the original--and not just the quantity but also the quality--appears in the new work? If a 'substantial portion' of the 'original' appears in the new work, then that's all you need for copyright infringement...

In July 2009, Cartrain walked into Tate Britain and removed a packet of Faber Castell 1990 Mongol 482 series pencils from Damien Hirst's installation, Pharmacy. Cartrain then made a fake police "Wanted" poster, which was distributed around London, stating that the pencils had been stolen and that if anyone had any information they should call the police on the phone number advertised.[4] Cartrain made this statement: For the safe return of Damien Hirsts pencils I would like my artworks back that Dacs and Hirst took off me in November.

Its [sic] not a large demand he can have his pencils back when I get my artwork back. Dacs are now not taking any notice of my emails and I have asked nicely more than five times to try and resolve this matter. Hirst has until the end of this month to resolve this or on 31 July the pencils will be sharpened. He has been warned.

Cartrain was subsequently arrested for £500,000 worth of theft and faced charges for what might have possibly been the biggest art theft in British history.

In December 2009 the Metropolitan Police dropped all charges against Cartrain. The Independent wrote: "Cartrain told me that, happily, all police charges have since been dropped and that he's even had a meeting with the Tate to discuss the issue.

What's more, he came face to face with Hirst himself at the latter's current show at London's White Cube gallery.

"Everyday we are being desensitised by highly sophisticated psychological conditioning techniques, purposely designed by marketing executives intent on assaulting our self-esteem. Advertising is dependent on the principle of submission, by relentlessly bombarding us with propaganda that emotionally distorts our perception of adequacy we are taught to believe that they possess the remedy for our emotional suffering."

"Contemporary civilization is so abnormally dysfunctional because our vulnerabilities are perpetually being exploited by a multitude of multinational corporations that glorify excessive self-indulgence and misdirect us into believing that salvation can be found in: pride, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, wrath, and sloth."

"Our society is run by lunatics, they are constantly devising scenarios that are exploitive of our misery in the name of entertainment."

"Programs like the “X factor” deliberately misappropriate the concept of self actualisation, utilising it as a perverse type of fishing rod bait that’s cast deep into the most destitute corners of society, the producers of these shows purposely want to catch the most psychologically damaged people possible in-order to parade them in-front of an audience to be dehumanised and ridiculed for a cheap laugh."

"We have been unconsciously indoctrinated into believing that inflicting misery on others is a noble and righteous endeavour in pursuance of our own gratification. These artworks are an attempt at decrypting the collective insanity ingrained in society and translating it into something acroamatic and meaningful. It’s a voyage into the psyche of fast-food workers that spit in customers food or those who trample others to death in the pursuit of securing half price George Foreman grills on Black Friday."

In the blue corner, battling CARTRAIN, we have `a collective of Paste-Up artists as: RXSkulls (USA), Subdude (UK), Mister Edwards (AUSTRALIA), Voxx Romana (USA), Seth Morley (UK), Inkblot (UK), Savant (UK), Vinay Hathy (UK), Emanuela Montorro (IT).

RxSkulls is notorious street artist based in Portland USA. After ten years in the street art scene, RxSkulls has created hundreds of variations of his original skull design and collaborations with artists from around the globe.

Subdude is a popular stencil artist based in London, known for his series of socio-political stencil artworks as "Stop Starring At This"' and "Is Not All About Your Selfie"

Mister Edwards is an image-maker, illustrator, typographer, educator, collector, and scrabble friend from Sydney, Australia..He studied Graphic Design at East Ham College of Technology, St Martins School of Art and The Royal College of Art.On leaving the Royal College he worked at i-D magazine where he became Art Editor. He left i-D to set up the influential design studio "Nice" with Stephen Male and Richard Bonner-Morgan.

Voxx Romana is a Portland-based street artist, who grew up in the Midwest. With small stickers on street signs to large murals in alleyways, his work colors the walls of great modern empires. Art has always been a part of his life, but his interest in street art developed in middle school. Another major influence in those formative years was his high school art teacher, Floyd D. Tunson, an established visual pop artist in the Rocky Mountain region. “He inspired a lot of my friends to become artists,” Voxx told me.

Seth Morley is an Italian video maker and stencil artist based in London known for his series of madonna associated with the quotes "Let Your Soul Guide You" and "Do Not Blindly Believe In What You See" appeared on the walls of Shoreditch and brick Lane in the winter of 2020.

Vinay Hathi is a designer and illustrator based in London. His most popular works include the Sainsbury Birkin and "$£@¥€"

Emanuela Montorro is an Italian artist living between Milan and London. Her most popular street artworks that appeared in London are the colorful lips.

DESCRIPTION OF THE EVENT

Join us for our fourth 'Battle of the Street Art' on Cheshire Street on Sunday 21st August 2022 from 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm to witness two legendary street artists battle to create an original graffiti mural from a theme selected by Secret Art London, in only 90 minutes.

In the red corner, we have Baroque Anarchist. Baroque Anarchist is the alter ego of Alexandra Suvorova, a London based, visual artist, who sees striking parallels between the contemporary moment and the Baroque epoch, which she mines for artistic guidance and inspiration. Born in Moscow during the 1986 Chernobyl Disaster, Suvorova has always been fascinated by the quest for immortality through science and art, and the vulnerability and strength of the body. Layering contemporary art practices into her background in Baroque painting and theatre design - tracing the present to its past, Baroque Anarchist creates contemporary works that are deeply personal, yet unafraid to tackle bold themes and contemporary issues. Suvorova obtained a BFA in painting and an MFA in stage and costume design at Surikov Art Institute in Moscow, as well as a degree in contemporary painting at Moscow’s Institute of Contemporary Art Issues (CAI) in 2012. In the same year, she was awarded a PhD in Theatre Design from the Department of Painting at the Russian Art Academy in Moscow. Her doctorate involved designing 80 costumes for a production of Hamlet at the Central Academic Theatre of the Russian Army, where she worked with costume and sets from 2008-2018. During that period, she also taught contemporary painting at Moscow Art School and was a guest lecturer at Eastern International Art College, Zhunzhou, China.

In 2019 Suvorova moved to London where she continues to paint with oils on large canvases. From initially sticking pieces from theatrical sets and costume into her Baroque-influenced paintings, many of her works began to spill over the limits of the canvas and ‘break the fourth wall’ between art and viewer, leading to experiments in installation art, painting on clothes, and interactive performance.

In the blue corner, battling Baroque Anarchist, we have `an Australian based artist David Lee Pereira. David Lee Pereira is a practicing visual artist whose paintings, illustrations, large scale murals and public installations delve into the fluidity of gender, sexuality and identity exploring these through the recurring themes of dysphoria and interpersonal relationships. Influenced by the work of impressionist and surrealist artists Georgia O’Keefe, Dali and Munch, and paying homage to baroque ikebana and dutch still life, Pereira’s floral expressions range from beautifully brutal to joyous and intimate and are overflowing with symbolism and narrative.

DESCRIPTION OF THE EVENT

Join us for our third 'Battle of the Street Art' on Cheshire Street on Sunday 7th August 2022 from 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm to witness two legendary street artists battle to create an original graffiti mural from a theme selected by Secret Art London, in only 90 minutes.

In the red corner, we have Reuben D., one of the most prolific street artists working in East London today. Like Banksy, Reuben D. likes to preserve his anonymity and will be performing during the Battle wearing a full-body boiler suit. Like Stik, Reuben D. is most famous for a character which he has created, which can be found around the streets of Brick Lane and Shoreditch in various poses, usually accompanied by humourous and thought-provoking phrases or messages. Reuben's most recognizable and popular works include the ‘I Farted In Yoga’ series.

In the blue corner, battling Reuben D., we have `London-based prodigy Alex Arnell. Alex Arnell received a BA (Hons) in Fine Art from the University of East Anglia in 1999. He used to work part-time in a primary school, making art with children, and this has had a huge influence on the freedom and youthful spirit which is so evident in his work. As for the diversity and varied choice of his subjects and handling, Alex Arnell wants to make art that is not contrived or elitist, so he tries to trust and follow his instincts with regard to ideas and media choice. This means that when making an artwork, his mood heavily influences the work which he creates. This makes it very interesting to watch Alex create his work live.

The Battle of Street Art will be presented by our commentator, actor Raymond Rose (Woman in Black, Clash of the Moths) and his glamorous assistant "Fica Bagnata", and will take place in two 45 minute halves, with an interval.

DESCRIPTION OF THE EVENT

Join us for our second 'Battle of the Street Art' on Cheshire Street on Sunday 17th July 2022 from 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm to witness two legendary street artists battle to create an original graffiti mural from a theme selected by the audience, in only 90 minutes.

In the red corner, we have one of the most famous street artists working in the world today, Los Angeles-based WRDSMTH. WRDSMTH is a published author, screenwriter, former advertising copywriter and street artist. Born and raised in the Midwest, he relocated to LA and started doing time in Hollywood, chasing the dream like countless others. Past and present worlds merged when he came up with the concept for WRDSMTH — a unique combination of stenciling and wheat pasting — and began painting/pasting walls with what he descibes as "indelible thoughts and phrases". There is an established secondary market in WRDSMTH's work, which often sells for five-figure sums at auction, making WRDSMTH a fantastic investment opportunity for contemporary art collectors. To find out more about WRDSMTH go to https://www.wrdsmth.com/ and www.instagram.com/wrdsmth

In the blue corner, battling WRDSMTH, we have 0rrible. 0rrible is a stencil artist based in the rolling hills of Devon. A legend of the East London paste-up scene his Pandas, Rats, Owls, and Wolves have gained a huge following prompting art collectors worldwide to snap up his original and limited edition screen-printed works. His latest pandemic-inspired series entitled "Eau De Virus" is an ingenious reinterpretation of Chanel's iconic No 19 - Eau de Parfum. This has appeared around the streets of Shoreditch / East London, adorning doors and walls, causing street art enthusiasts, bloggers, tourists, critics, and archivists to all flock to take photos. Drawing on themes of luxury consumerism and economic inequality, stencil art like this in London's gentrified Shoreditch alludes to another potentially more harmful virus - capitalism. His use of fluoro and high impact colors are inspired by pasted-up drum and bass rave posters of the late 90s/ 2000s. 0rrible is held in high regard with his peers and his work has sold at auction alongside the likes of Banksy, Damian Hirst, Andy Warhol, Ben Eine, Inkie, Blek le Rat, and the Conner brothers. To find out more about 0rrible go to www.instagram.com/0rrible
